Democracy When?

Well so far I’ve managed to avoid politics here on the blog, but last night I heard a segment on Democracy Now which really worried me in which Jeremy Scahill discusses how despite Antiwar Rhetoric, Clinton-Obama Plans Would Keep US Mercenaries, Troops in Iraq for Years to Come. I haven’t been paying too much attention to the Democratic race yet, figuring I’d start doing my research some time this summer. This story made me feel a sudden urgency to do that research now to verify the claims made by Jeremy Scahill about how both the Obama and Clinton campaigns, despite their public statements have realistic plans for withdrawal from Iraq anytime soon. Damn and Nader just announced his campaign. All I need is a third party to bring out the idealist in me who feels horrible voting for the lesser of two evils. Not to say that I’m not extremely excited about both Democratic candidates, I think this is certainly a pivotal moment in US history as America prepares to elect its first minority president. But this story is worth a listen, neo-colonialism is a terrible thing, but is it realistic to hope any president can reform our foreign policy in a way that will undo the mess 8 years under GW?

On a related note I came across this book this morning which looks great, Thirty Ways of Looking at Hillary: Reflections by Women Writers. I started reading Susan Orlean’s essay called “Political Animals” and was laughing my ass off.
